One of the common methods for analysis of drought is the run theory (RT), which was first proposed by Yevjevich (). A run analysis of drought is based on the theory of runs for discrete variables, although the theory is also applicable to continuous variables. RT quantitatively describes how a hydrological process crosses. We use run theory to estimate the frequency of drought and pluvial events with different duration categories (short and medium term) and generate both agricultural-type (based on SMPct; Fig. 9) and meteorological-type (based on SPI3; Fig. S14) global hazard maps (represented by return periods).
Agricultural drought links various characteristics of meteorological (or hydrological) drought to agricultural impacts, focusing on precipitation shortages, differences between actual and potential evapotranspiration, soil water deficits, reduced groundwater or reservoir levels, and so forth.  The runs theory approach provides a suitable quantification of the recurrence of drought events when a magnitude or set of magnitudes are of main interest to evaluate the drought occurrence. However, in a general analysis, every magnitude may provide the criterion for detecting the extreme aspect of some drought events.
