One of the common methods for analysis of drought is the run theory (RT), which was first proposed by Yevjevich (). A run analysis of drought is based on the theory of runs for discrete variables, although the theory is also applicable to continuous variables. RT quantitatively describes how a hydrological process crosses. We use run theory to estimate the frequency of drought and pluvial events with different duration categories (short and medium term) and generate both agricultural-type (based on SMPct; Fig. 9) and meteorological-type (based on SPI3; Fig. S14) global hazard maps (represented by return periods).

Agricultural drought links various characteristics of meteorological (or hydrological) drought to agricultural impacts, focusing on precipitation shortages, differences between actual and potential evapotranspiration, soil water deficits, reduced groundwater or reservoir levels, and so forth.   [33] The runs theory approach provides a suitable quantification of the recurrence of drought events when a magnitude or set of magnitudes are of main interest to evaluate the drought occurrence. However, in a general analysis, every magnitude may provide the criterion for detecting the extreme aspect of some drought events.

The theory of drought identification, which permitted assessment of location, intensity, and duration of drought from study of environmental moisture status dynamics, was developed at the end of the s. The verification and development of drought theory require monitoring of numerous environmental parameters.

Analysis of drought characteristics by the theory of runs by Pedro Guerrero-Salazar Download PDF EPUB FB2

In this study, two drought characteristic variables (the drought duration and severity) were extracted by using the Theory of Runs based on four drought indexes (i.e., the percentage of precipitation anomaly, the standardized precipitation index, the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index and the improved comprehensive meteorological drought index).Author: Liping Wang, Liping Wang, Xingnan Zhang, Shufang Wang, Mohamed Khaled Salahou, Yuanhao Fang.

Subject(s): HIDROLOGIA | MODELOS MATEMATICOS | SEQUIAS Summary: Este documento da a conocer las metodologías para el análisis de sequias, son presentadas sobre las bases de definiciones objetivas. Drought is a complex natural disaster phenomenon. It is of great significance to analyze the occurrence and development of drought events for drought prevention.

A study on local and regional analyses of droughts is applied to a southern region of Portugal, Alentejo, aiming at contributing to a better understanding of droughts in that region. The theory of runs and the SPI are applied at a local level in order to identify local droughts. Two time scales were used, the 3-month and the month by: drought characteristics using the run theory for a given threshold level.

A run is defined as a portion of the time series of a drought variable, in which all values are either below or above the. The seasonal values of RO and RS were quantified, by applying the theory of runs to SW t (assumed as the drought reference variable), with a threshold equal to the crop critical point.

The analysis shows that the best-fitting marginal distribution for both RO and RS is a truncated Gumbel distribution. According to the run theory, a drought event is defined as a continuous negative run of index values for at least three consecutive months. The pivotal criteria to diagnose dryness are based on SPEI ≤ −1 and sc-PDSI ≤ The lower the value of the drought index the more severe the drought conditions.

Analysis of Existing Drought Characteristics in Study Area Analysis of drought characteristics was conducted for Namhan River upper stream basin in Korea peninsula.

Run Theory described in the last Paragraph was applied for anal. We chose Songnen grassland as a case study, used a standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) to model drought characteristics, employed run theory to define the drought event, and chose copula functions to construct the joint distribution for drought variables.

This paper analyzes hydrologic-drought characteristics from different sights, using runs theory, displacement theory, and stochastic process theory. It deals with happening, developing and diverting regularly for hydrologic-drought, and provides theoretical basis for regional water resources plan.

For this purpose, two main characteristics of drought (severity and duration) were extracted by run theory in a past (–) and future (–) period based on the SPI and SPEI, and studied using copula theory. Three functions, that is, Frank, Gaussian and Gumbel copula, were selected to fit with drought severity and duration.

Hydrological Drought Characteristics Hege Hisdal, Lena M. Tallaksen, Bente Clausen, Elisabeth Peters, Alan Gustard Introduction One of the first steps in a drought analysis is to decide on the hydrological drought characteristics to be studied.

Drought affect many sectors in society and. Drought events, as well as their frequency, duration, severity, intensity and preferred season, are studied by using the Run theory and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) at 3-month, 6-month, and month timescales.

The theory of runs is applied to model drought recurrence as an alternating renewal process, describing droughts simultaneously in terms of their durations and severities.

Short historical records usually do not allow reliable bivariate analyses. An analysis of at-site and regional drought characteristics of precipitation series in Sicily is presented, based on the application of the run method to two areas in Sicily as well as to the whole Sicilian territory.

The drought analysis has been preceded by stationarity and randomness testing of .The Theory of Runs. The theory of runs as proposed by Yevjevich [11] is used to determine properties of hydrologic droughts.

Based on the classification of drought, the truncation level was held as – in this runs analysis. A hydrologic drought event is considered as an event during which SPI is continuously below the truncation level.Fig.
